Second half of pictures from The Cat’s trip (there are more pictures but we didn’t want to bore you).

More Noodles

Duck Tongues

I’ve tried duck tongue before. Lots of cartilage. Not much meat. Guess it’s an acquired taste kind of thing.

Braised Turnip

Red Bean Dessert

Coconut pudding on top (I think).

The Cat’s Buffet Plate

Oftentimes, the hotels  in China (at least the ones we’ve stayed at)  includes a buffet breakfast. No continental breakfast, a full on hearty selection (one of the reasons I like going to China). 🙂

Not sure if The Cat remembers what kind of tea this was.

Wood Ear Fungus

There’s supposed be some kind of health benefit in eating this fungus. Another acquired taste. Luckily, I’ve acquired the taste. 🙂

Shoyu Pork

Yum! We used to think that Shanghai was the place for shoyu pork. On this last trip, The Cat had shoyu pork at another city. She said one of the best ever! And I wasn’t there. Sob!

Place Setting

More Place Setting

I would love to get my paws on a table setting like this. Wow.

Shrimp, One More Time

Have  to stop now, drooling. Hee hee.

Enjoy. Eat well.

The Cat went to Shanghai, and the neighboring regions of Nanjing, and Ningbo. Within each region, she visited numerous cities/towns. Here are some of her pictures, posted chronologically.

Stop over in Japan.

Vegetable/Herb Tower

I keep forgetting the vegetable/herb name but it’s mixed with finely chopped tofu. Kind of minty and refreshing.

Smoked Fish?

Braised Dried Tofu

Ung Choi

Fried Fish

While The  Cat was in Shanghai, she went to burn some incense for her father.

Chinese Temple

Temple Interior

Shoyu Pork

As you may have noticed, The Cat forgot to take a picture until almost the end (at least it wasn’t a picture of an empty bowl). 🙂

Eel Stew with Cellophane Noodles

More Shrimp

Won Ton Soup

Smoked Duck

Pan Fried Fishcake

I thought they were deep-fried sushi. 🙂

Even More Shrimp

Man, I missed out. Oh well, there’s always next time.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Chinese Snacks, Part 1

We were finally able to dig into some of the snacks The Cat brought back from her trip (see here and here for reference).

Brewed some nice green tea, sat down, and dug in.

The first was a box spring onion cakes or cookies.

Individually wrapped, about the size of a cracker.

Spring Onion Cookie

A very distinct onion flavor, the texture is like a saloon pilot cracker, aka hardtack. As I was munching on this, I thought about Triscuit crackers (why, I dunno). I think this would be great with a charcuterie and/or cheese platter. I may look for some salami later (I thought I saw some in the back of the chocolate shop last week). Heh heh.

The next box we opened contained “Phoenix Cakes”.

“Phoenix Cakes

The Cat doesn’t know why they’re called “Phoenix Cakes”. It was the favorite snack of one of her childhood friends. The inside is filled with mincemeat. The Cat remembers them a little large with more filling. I thought they tasted  okay (but then, I don’t have the historical reference).

Lastly for this session, we opened the container of pumpkin seed crunch.

Pumpkin Seed Crunch

Slightly sweet with some Goji berries. Again, I thought they were okay. The Cat was not impressed.

We worked our way through less than half of the booty The Cat brought back. Stay tuned for more.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Pictures from The Cat’s Trip

Some pictures from The Cat’s trip, she went to Shanghai for her college class reunion.

Mixed Noodles

Simple ingredients. Noodles tossed with oil, green onions, salt (or soy sauce), and pepper. Easy to prepare, hard to master.

Breakfast Buffet

Built in the 1920’s. The buffet is included with the room price. The Cat said it was decent.

Dining Tables

Kind of old world vibe. The Cat said we can stay there next time.

Vegetarian Dish

Not sure if this is tofu or gluten. The texture is kind of spongey.

Green Tea

Assorted Snacks for High Tea

One of  The Cat’s friends took her to the Bund area for English tea.

A Closer Look

The Cat forgot to take a picture of the English tea and cup. She was kind of distracted.

Some kind of commercial  was filming nearby.

Rice Soup with Greens

One of the meals The Cat ate when there was nothing scheduled. Comfort food.

Can you guess what’s in each  of the containers?

From the top, soy bean, prawn, and duck’s tongue. Quack quack, or maybe no quack since no tongue. Hee hee.

The Cat took more pictures, these were just some of them. Time for a cat nap, still jet lagged.

Eat well. Meow meow!
