“BBQ short ribs” listed on the menu board at the local take-out under beef. The Mouse was thinking either slow smoked with a BBQ sauce or braised in BBQ sauce.

It was galbi.

Galbi Plate

Not that The Mouse is complaining, the meat was really well cooked and seasoned, just The Mouse had something else on his mind. The search continues.

The Mouse also picked up a teriyaki porkchop plate for The Cat.

Teriyaki Pork Chop

Thin sliced and grilled to almost crispy. Mmm.

Stay safe and well.

The Mouse is still trying place that may not appeal to The Cat. This one, when they where at their original location, was hard to coordinate.

Because, their hours were a bit “not so user-friendly”.

Looks like poké to me albeit mainland style. Oh well, tomato, tomato, semantics. 🙂

Even my cousin (on the mainland) had to get in on the act.

Show off. 🙂

Hope you’re enjoying your long weekend, if you’re lucky to get one. If not, disregard that last sentence.

Enjoy. Eat well.

I’ll just say due to circumstances beyond my control, today ended up being mix rice day.

Corned BeeF with Gravy, Rice and Egg

The corned beef hash locally tends to be more potato-y than corned beef hash-y. Dunno if it’s the Japanese influence with their croquettes or something elses. Trust me, there’s a hash patty under all that gravy.

Bibimbap with Banchan

Bibimbap with Banchan

Late lunch from the Korean restaurant near The Cat’s office. Used to be obscenely cheap, now, just reasonable (I guess prices have to go up all over).

Everything went in, even the banchan (when you eat alone, you don’t have to share :). )

You may notice there’s not too much kochujang sauce in the dish, I prefer my rice more blonde than red. I like my stomach.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Sometimes, Its About the Journey

So I come across this picture of a banh mi here, and I drool all over the monitor. A definite “I want”. I haven’t eaten a banh mi for a while, I’m not a big fan of the local chain of banh mi stores here (I feel the quality is inconsistent). A search on Yelp turns up a worthy prospect. The reviews are glowing for bubble or boba drinks and banh mi (I won’t reveal the store to protect the guilty). 😉

I get  to the store and it’s empty of customers and employees. I hear activity in the back of the store. The drink menu is on the walls and a scan the walls for the banh mi menu, none. When one of the employees comes out from the back, I ask him about banh mi or sandwiches. He rudely replies “No Sandwiches!” I ask if no sandwiches only for today or none period. He replies louder “NO SANDWICHES!” I guess he thought I was hard of hearing. I turned around an walked out. Sigh.

Now the dilemma, what’s for lunch? I vaguely recall seeing a hole in the wall nearby (forgot the name). I get to the complex where I think the place is and search the directory.

Building C is in the back of the property, very hard to find. But the courtyard where the store is has this.

The store has no sign outside, the menu is posted on a flat screen TV.

I was thinking about ordering the Hawaiian Plate when I saw … Shoyu Pork! Thoughts of banh miwere suddenly erased. Choice of white or brown rice and corn or mac salad.

Shoyu Pork, Brown Rice, Corn

In my defense, I did choose brown rice over white and corn over mac salad. Everything was pretty good, albeit a little on the salty side. The socks stayed on but a very decent lunch.

The portions were more than adequate, I think I ate enough for at least lunch and dinner.

In my opinion, I wouldn’t go out of my way to eat here, but, if in the neighborhood, a good option.

Sometimes it is about the journey and less about the destination.

Still searching for a good banh mi place though. Have a good weekend.

Enjoy.

Keeping It Local

The Cat has mentioned this place before.

Sign

One of her friends that lives nearby takes her grandchildren there quite often. We’ve driven by a couple of times without stopping, thought it was just a “snack bar”.

Browsing through Yelp.com I came across the reviews and had second thoughts. So, today, lunch was here.

Menu of the Day

I was tempted to try the stir-fry veggie plate but since the Kuahiwi beef is their specialty and by eating the hamburger steak I would be supporting local suppliers, I went with the hamburger steak (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it). I did ask if they could do a mixed plate, no luck. Based on the reviews, one of the items that is a must order is the kalo mac salad. They person taking my order said they were out of mayonnaise (it was 11:00 am) so no kalomac salad. Good thing someone in the kitchen found just enough mayonnaise to make ten orders as someone rushed out for more.

Kuahiwi Hamburger Steak, Kalo Mac Salad, Brown Rice

The hamburger steak was hand formed, with an “artisanal” taste to it. But the high point of the lunch was definitely the kalo mac salad. The macaroni, salad potato, and kalo each had a different texture. Very tasty.

What lacked in presentation was more than made up in taste.

Enjoy.
