Asahi Grill. Their history is confusing to The Mouse. They started in a bowling alley. After that, the history gets confused for The Mouse. Browsing online menu. Omurice and Okinawan bitter melon stir-fry. Try try.

Turns out online was not updated. No omurice. 😦

The Mouse ordered steak stir-fry instead.

Steak Stir-Fry

A happy substitute. Too many onions for The Cat.

The Cat went with the bitter melon stir-fry.

Bitter Melon Stir-Fry

The Cat liked.

Both orders came with choice of mac salad or tossed greens. 🙂

The Mouse continues to search for omurice.

Be safe and well.

“BBQ short ribs” listed on the menu board at the local take-out under beef. The Mouse was thinking either slow smoked with a BBQ sauce or braised in BBQ sauce.

It was galbi.

Galbi Plate

Not that The Mouse is complaining, the meat was really well cooked and seasoned, just The Mouse had something else on his mind. The search continues.

The Mouse also picked up a teriyaki porkchop plate for The Cat.

Teriyaki Pork Chop

Thin sliced and grilled to almost crispy. Mmm.

Stay safe and well.

The Cat and The Mouse dropped off an envelope to a graduate, daughter of our favorite beef chip makers.

Favor

Since we were in the area, tried an old school diner.

The Place

Since 1947, gotta be good. Location (distance) and parking were barriers to The Cat and The Mouse trying sooner.

The ordered one of the chalkboard specials, furikake salmon.

Furikake Salmon, Wasabi Cream

The Mouse ordered hamburger steak.

Hamburger Steak, Grilled Onions, Mushroom Gravy

Mmm. Old school. The Mouse thinks there might have been a little filler in the hamburger (breadcrumbs?). The meat was very soft (in a good way).

Of course, The Mouse can’t visit an old school eatery without indulging in green river, when available.

Pink Lemonade, Green River

The Cat has approved a return, hopefully, next time, the inside dining will be open. The Mouse heard their saimin is good. 🙂

Stay safe and well.

Blood test yesterday. Fasting before. Hungry after. Need breakfast.

Times Coffee Shop. Special of the Day.

Roast Pork Loco Moco

Western style roast pork, not Chinese style. Pork butt not pork belly. Okay, could’ve used a bit (just a bit) more fat. Still good. Excellent brown gravy. 🙂

Banana Pancake

Told ya, The Mouse was hungry. Hee hee. One of the better banana pancakes in a while, very  banana-y flavor, Dunno, along with the bananas, maybe chef added some banana extract to the batter.

The view.

Ko`olau Mountains

Dreams of “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” or Misty Mountains?

The Mouse was satiated. Hee hee.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Diner

A relative’s.

Front

Front

Newly opened, re-opened, or re-re-opened. Through a series of unfortunate events, the location has changed several times. Old location for one of the Sizzler Restaurants.

Layout kinda looks the same inside too. Buffet tables (covered up), booth seating, etc. Was in the neighborhood (gassin’ The Cat’s car up), thought I’d check it out (relative and all that).

On to the food.

Side Salad

Side Salad

You don’t see these types of salads too often anymore. Iceburg lettuce, cucumber slices, tomato wedge, Italian dressing (or French, or Thousand Island). Hee hee.

Roast Pork with Gravy

Roast Pork with Gravy

Includes rice and overcooked mixed vegetables. How authentic is that? Think Colombia Inn or Flamingo Restaurant (both gone), or Nighthawks painting, or The Sting movie. You get the idea.

Not gourmet by any stretch of the imagination, but considering the location (not disparaging the location or the clientele at all, but sometimes, you want boots on the ground comfort food. Pork was well-cooked (fork tender), coulda used a little more gravy though (especially on the rice). And if I The Mouse could be so bold, some mushrooms in the gravy (even canned). Just to add a little oomph. Rice and gravy, a local tradition. 🙂

Rice and gravy. Tell you about small-kid time hanabata days at the Nu‘uanu YMCA another time.

Good to see the relative is back in business, good luck to him.

Enjoy. Eat well.
