In The Cat and The Mouse case, it was a 2.5-fer. The Cat suggested lunch at Orchids Restaurant. Entree plus appetizer or dessert for special price. The Mouse was a little hesitant. Smaller portions? Still hungry after?

But, try try.

Kona Maine Lobster Bisque, Lemongrass.

What is Kona Maine? Dunno, tasted good.

Homemade Lasagnette

Fresh Chef Pasta, Kahuku Prawns, Scallops, Avocado, Lightly Spiced. Think deconstructed lasagna, The Cat kept thinking won ton skin. Look Funn noods? Hee hee.

The Mouse chose.

Fried Calamari

One of the best The Mouse has eaten, not greasy, super crispy. Nom!

Orchids Burger

8 oz. Prime Burger, Shiitake Sauté, Romaine, Tomato, Onion, Bacon, American Cheese, Guacamole. More nom.

Server suggested we cannot leave without indulging in their signature coconut cake. Twist our arms/paws.

Chiffon Cake, Coconut-Amaretto Cream.

A little on the pricey side for lunch, but not not “break the bank, OMG what were you thinking!” pricey. More affordable than dinner. Not everyday, but once in a while. Hope to be back in the not too distant future.

Lobster, crab, oysters, poke, hamachi sashimi, tako, ahi sashimi, oh my! Two platters full plus an overflow plate of crab claws and shrimp!

We could’ve stopped there, but Chef H is very generous.

Split Pea Bula Bula Soup



Suggested to match the seafood.

Spinach Salad



Crispy onions, smashed potato (both regular and Okinawan), mushroom gravy, haricot verts, grilled tomato. Nom!

Chef likes Bananas Foster for dessert. The Mouse likes the show, but really likes Chef’s souffle.

The Mouse made a slight request change, half Bananas Foster and half souffle for dessert.

The Cat wanted to treat an old client.

Of all days, skies decided to open up with drenching rain.

But still gotta eat.

The Mouse almost did a “Oliver Twist” but The Mouse restrained for more to come. Hee hee.

Boula Boula Soup with Abalone


Crab Cake

Three sauces (The Mouse couldn’t hear). Nom!

Seafood Salad

Scallops, fish, crab claw, spinach, mango, citrus. Happy Cat.

Beef Wellington

Chicken mousse with Kurabota ham, carrots, and mushrooms. Currant and Madeira reduction. Huge over the top Yum!

By the Sea

Dinner. 53 by the Sea. Hawai‘i slash Mediterranean cuisine? Hmm.

Table View

Fully expected Jack Lord to be at the next table, in essence anyway. And The Ventures rocking in the bar. Okay The Mouse totally carbon dated himself. Hee hee.

Choya Ume Soda

Light, slightly sweet, good for summer.

Bread Dipping Oil

The oil was olive oil, but The Mouse got confused about the dark liquid, shoyu? truffle something? truffle shoyu? Salty and umami-ish.

Two types of rolls “plain” and black olive ciabatta. Plain went better with the dipping oil than the olive.

Escargot Stuffed Mushrooms

Spicy Tomato Cream, Crispy Crostini. The Mouse liked more than The Cat, she preferred Michel’s (more traditional garlic butter). The Mouse just needed a bowl of rice and a fried egg (escargot loco moco?). Hee hee.

Mahi Mahi

The Cat’s entree. Moromiso Macadamia Nut Crust, Kombu, Sauteed Local Vegetable, Clam Jus. Dish was good, could’ve used a touch more umami. A dash of shoyu maybe?

Roasted Duck

The Mouse’s order. Cranberry Walnut Honey Glaze, Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Lilikoi Demi. Well prepared, perfectly seasoned. Could’ve left off the lilikoi demi, just my opinion. The Mouse’s one minor “complaint”, skin wasn’t crispy (wasn’t supposed to be). Next time, The Mouse gonna bring his own torch. Hee hee.

Gelato/Sorbet Trio

Raspberry, Lilikoi, and Chocolate/Vanilla Hazelnut, with berries! Excellent.

Complimentary Dessert

Strawberry Shortcake with more berries.
