By the Sea

Dinner. 53 by the Sea. Hawai‘i slash Mediterranean cuisine? Hmm.

Table View

Fully expected Jack Lord to be at the next table, in essence anyway. And The Ventures rocking in the bar. Okay The Mouse totally carbon dated himself. Hee hee.

Choya Ume Soda

Light, slightly sweet, good for summer.

Bread Dipping Oil

The oil was olive oil, but The Mouse got confused about the dark liquid, shoyu? truffle something? truffle shoyu? Salty and umami-ish.

Two types of rolls “plain” and black olive ciabatta. Plain went better with the dipping oil than the olive.

Escargot Stuffed Mushrooms

Spicy Tomato Cream, Crispy Crostini. The Mouse liked more than The Cat, she preferred Michel’s (more traditional garlic butter). The Mouse just needed a bowl of rice and a fried egg (escargot loco moco?). Hee hee.

Mahi Mahi

The Cat’s entree. Moromiso Macadamia Nut Crust, Kombu, Sauteed Local Vegetable, Clam Jus. Dish was good, could’ve used a touch more umami. A dash of shoyu maybe?

Roasted Duck

The Mouse’s order. Cranberry Walnut Honey Glaze, Asparagus, Sweet Potato, Lilikoi Demi. Well prepared, perfectly seasoned. Could’ve left off the lilikoi demi, just my opinion. The Mouse’s one minor “complaint”, skin wasn’t crispy (wasn’t supposed to be). Next time, The Mouse gonna bring his own torch. Hee hee.

Gelato/Sorbet Trio

Raspberry, Lilikoi, and Chocolate/Vanilla Hazelnut, with berries! Excellent.

Complimentary Dessert

Strawberry Shortcake with more berries.

The Famed Staircase

Shades of Rhett Butler? Hee hee.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Favorite aunty, “unique” cousins. Michel’s at the Colony Surf.

Amuse Bouche

Salmon, Okinawan sweet potato, spinach, and The Mouse forgot the rest. Tasty!

One of the restaurant’s signature.

Kualoa Oysters

Caesar Salad

With anchovies! 🙂

More anchovies

The Mouse always asks for extra, always accommodating. Fine dining service with a smile.

Lobster Bisque

Another signature, finished at the table with flambe lobster meat.

Michel’s Ocean Bounty

Lobster, scallop, oyster, blackened ahi, and forgot what else.

There was also a seafood en papilotte dish that The Mouse somehow didn’t get a picture of, still getting used to the new phone.

The flourless chocolate cake for dessert also did not make it into The Mouse’s phone. Sigh.

Hope they enjoyed themselves, always good to get together with family. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

Okay, continuing on.

California Estero Bay Abalone

Tender abalone pan sautéed & served with angel hair pasta, juliennes of zucchini, tomato arrabbiata & lemon caper butter.

First time trying non-Chinese style abalone for The Cat and The Mouse. A pleasant experience.

New York Café de Paris

New York steak on a bed of sweet Maui onions & roasted button mushrooms; served with Dauphine potatoes, snap peas & Cabernet reduction.

Palate Cleanser

Kalamasi sorbet with blueberry.

Tableside Dessert

Restaurant is known for their tableside dishes.

Bananas Foster

Chef Hardy even shared some mangoes with The Cat (he got a great deal, $1.oo each, he bought a hundred for the restaurant).

One last shot of sunset/city lights.

Waikiki Lights (as seen by The Cat)

As a bonus, The Cat may have picked up two new clients. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

Back to Michel’s. Last time, with the group from Australia, The Cat and The Mouse could not fully appreciate the food. Too busy playing “hosts”.

Original plan was to order from the menu, items that we wanted to try. Chef Hardy had other plans.

Amuse Bouche

Salmon tartare on toast, a demitasse of Vichyssoise.

Iced Harvest of the Sea

King Crab, Maine Lobster, Abalone, Ahi Poke, Hamachi, Ahi Sashimi, Oysters,  Prawns, Spanish Galician Octopus

The receding sun was playing havoc to picture taking. It’s all good.

Speaking of sunset …

Helix Escargots Bourgogne

Half-a-dozen French snails, in Michel’s famous herbed-garlic butter. The Cat was happy, and getting full.

Tableside Prepping

Warm Baby Spinach Salad

Garnished with Macadamia Nuts Over Warm Bacon &  Marinated Shiitake Mushrooms Drizzled with Onion Vinaigrette

One of the best spinach salads (it’s all about the dressing).

Sorry, have to get ready to leave for work.

Will continue later. Stay tuned.

Enjoy. Eat well.

A while back, The Cat was named an executor of one of her client’s estates. He was an ex-pat living abroad (that used to live here). Yesterday, a group of his friends brought a part of his ashes back to SPAM land for his send-off (a portion stayed in Australia).

Since The Cat didn’t really know the client on a personal level, The Cat was a little perplexed about the memorial dinner.

By serendipitous coincidence, The Cat made reservations at Michel’s at the Colony Surf. Turns out the client, R, loved France and French food.

The Place

Near one of R’s favorites spots, Diamond Head.

Since the group was relatively large (fifteen), individual ordering could be prohibitive and cumbersome, went with chef’s choice for the table.

Amuse Bouche

Ahi tartare, shiso leaf, caviar. Nom! The Mouse’s only “complaint” (and totally not in the spirit of an “amuse bouche”), The Mouse wanted more. Sigh. Hee hee.

Lobster Bisque

Menu description: Served for over 40 years at Michel’s with fresh Maine lobster meat flamed in Cognac at your table.

The Requisite “Flamed”

Caesar Salad

Menu description: Hirabara baby romaine & hearts of palm, tossed tableside in our classic creamy dressing, anchovy filets served upon request.

The picture is prior to The Mouse’s request of more anchovies. Server was kind enough to “load up” The Mouse’s plate. Dragons breathe fire, The Mouse breathes anchovy breath. Hee hee. Haaaaah!

Fish Course

Salmon, tomato coulis, tomato confit, asparagus, angel hair pasta. Well prepared.

Palate Refresher

Kalamansi sorbetto with blueberry. Happy.

Meat Course

Venison, mashed potato, mushroom risotto, foie gras. I think the sauce had blueberries in it. Socks off nom.

So, everyone else’s plate was a stacked presentation, The Mouse’s looked a little deconstructed. But, The Mouse had the biggest foie gras piece. What does the soccer announcer say? SCOOOOOOOOOOOOORE! 🙂

Chef H procured fresh peaches and made Peach Melba. Peaches, vanilla ice cream, raspberries, whipped cream, amaretto. A nice ending to an awesome dinner. Chef even gave us the leftover peaches to take home.

Thanks Chef H, we will be back.

All R’s Australian friends felt the dinner was a perfect send-off.

The Mouse was fully satisfied and satiated.

Enjoy. Eat well.
