Just Add Water?

The Mouse, small-kid time, used to see ads in comics about capsules that when thrown in water would expand into animals, fish, etc. Do those trinkets still exist?

Anyway, The Mouse had a flashback while prepping wood-ear fungus. hee hee.

Before

The quarter is for size reference.

After

Soaked in boiling water. Expanded to at least twice its dried size. “Release the Kraken”? Hee hee.

Be safe and well.

Mystery

The Cat brought home an unmarked bag of dried vegetable, no, not that kind of dried “vegetable”. Some kinda Chinese stuff.

Dried Vegetable

According to The Cat, can be steamed, boiled, added to soups. Super salty, had to rinse twice after boiling to get it to an edible stage.

Reconstituted Boiled Vegetable

The Cat seems to like it, The Mouse is more ambivalent. Could be dried salted turnip greens, definitely not mustard cabbage (too mild tasting), dunno.

Anyone out there knows what this is?

Maybe adding this mystery dried vegetable to the next batch of chicken feet or pork foot soup. Stay tuned.

Enjoy. Eat well.

We have tons (figuratively) in the fridge.

Dried Green Vegetable

Dried Green Vegetable

Been throwing ’em in The Cat’s soup/noodles. Sorry, dunno the Chinese name for this.

Dried Brown Vegetable

Dried Brown Vegetable

Again, dunno the Chinese name. Supposed be good to cook with shoyu pork. Have not tried to yet.

I tried to just parboil it plain, just to taste it in its “natural” state. Kind of funky/fermented taste (in a good way), maybe umami-ish? Mushroom-y? Threw some into the Cat’s noodles.

Not bad, went well with the smoked pork hock. Have to go get some pork belly soon. Shoyu pork!

Enjoy. Eat well.
