“Since we were in the neighborhood.” Had to make a stop at Manago Restaurant. Super old school.

Almost Twilight

Menu

Sides

Pickled seaweed, macaroni potato salad, mixed vegetables.

Mahi Mahi

The Mouse’s. Pan-fried, garlic and butter. The best!

The Cat ordered opakapaka, looked so similar the server was confused for a moment.

Night

Hopefully, we can return again.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Last Night of Travel

Suggested restaurant was closed. Early flight out next day. Concierge suggested place might be too pricey. Ate at the hotel bar.

Pork Belly Lettuce Tomato Sandwich

The Mouse’s. Pork belly confit. Well-cooked. Tender, slightly fatty (in a good way). Could’ve used a touch more “umph”. Maybe sriracha mayo? Gojijang mayo? Lau Gan Ma dip? Still good.

Furikake Fish Sandwich

The Cat’s, she liked.

Hilo Bay

Morning view. Too bad we couldn’t stay a little longer. Maybe next time.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Starting with Black Sand Beach.

Black Sand Beach

Then a drive to Volcano National Park.

Dormant Crater

Due to severe shifting, the park is substantially closed pending assessments and repairs. Sigh.

Steam Vents

Next Stop Volcano Winery, which was the main purpose of this little weekend flyby. The winery is one of The Cat’s clients and last weekend they were hosting their “harvest” festival.

The Mouse’s reward for all the driving.

Kalua Pork Slider

Sponsored by one of the nearby schools. The proceeds of the festival benefits the school.

Coffee and Cardamom Coffee Cake

Nom.

Around the winery property, there are a couple of empty lava tubes.

Lava Tube Opening

And another.

Lava Tube

The Mouse was thinking, how about, making the openings nice nice, stabilizing the tube and making these natural wine cellars? Hmm? Would make a great attraction. Jus’ sayin’. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

A pit stop for The Cat and The Mouse between Kona and Hilo.

Sign

Quaint, rustic restaurant. Mix of tourist and locals. Menu reminded The Mouse of tourist menus back before the Hawai`i Regional Cuisine movement. Interesting.

Panko Crusted Fish Sandwich

The Mouse order. One of the better fried fish sandwiches in recent memory. Oven baked planks of potato.

Chicken Salad in Papaya Half

The Cat’s order. The Mouse remember small-mouse time on the menu. Wow!

Still “exotic”.

Highlight was the restaurant’s pies.

Mac-nut cream pies

Super old school, nothing wrong with that. Server gave us an extra piece because it was “damaged”. Hee hee. Score!

Oh! The Mouse had to show you the bathroom signs. Who said this place is a throwback to another time? For the reading and emoji enabled.

“A Walk in the Clouds”? Kinda?

Coffee, not grapes. No Paul Sutton, Neo, nor John Wick. Not even Ted. But still pretty breathless.

View to the Ocean

More pics.

Farms is one of few certified organic. They are also heading toward “off the grid”. Solar, water catchment, etc. Awesome visit. Thanks Dawn and Robert! Hana Hou!

Enjoy. Eat well.
