The Mouse’s favorite cuts of beef, the tail, and the tongue.

Browsing on Yelp, came across pictures of beef tongue only on Wednesday special at old school “cafe”. The Mouse obsessed for a couple of weeks.

A small detour on The Mouse’s commuting route. Not too far.

Finally decided to take the plunge.

The Place

Even the menu cover has an old school feel, too bad the prices are not the same. Sigh.

Oh well, forging ahead.

Salad

Super old school. Iceburg lettuce. Takes The Mouse back to eateries like The Wisteria, Colombia Inn, and Flamingo Restaurant, all gone now. Sigh.

Beef Tongue on Spinach

Cooked a very long time, fork tender, The Mouse thinks canned spinach, but no matter, old school vibe. Both socks off. Nom!

For dessert

Peach Pie

Again, The Mouse thinks canned peaches, not canned peach pie filling, but canned peaches. That’s okay, kept to the old school vibe.

Check put a slight dent in the wallet, but a small indulgence. The Mouse was happy. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

A Teaser

Picked up from the Japanese warehouse market while hunting for onigiri for dinner.

Package “Jook” #1

According to picture and ingredient label, this one contains ume. Yay!

Package “Jook” #2

With azuki beans (sweet). Yay again.

Directions

So, looks like boil package in water for five minutes or microwave for two. Still relatively cold here in SPAM Land, The Mouse hopes to try it over the weekend. Stay tuned.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Not chicken feet nor pig feet soup this week. The Mouse picked up a package of oxtail. A little on the pricey side, small package, “affordable”.

Oxtail

Enough for two bowls and leftover.

Just on the side, the label.

Label

Beef, Ox, is that like “Master Shifu”, JK. Hee hee.

Anyways, besides the usual suspects (ginger, whiskey, apple cider vinegar), The Mouse’s version of oxtail soup has to have certain other ingredients.

Peanuts

and

Star Anise

After overnight soft simmering, and a visit to the farmers market, the soup.

Oxtail Soup with Mustard Greens and Chinese Parsley

Fall off the bone tender.

The Cat’s bowl had the added noodles.

The Cat’s Bowl

The Cat slurped.

Enjoy. Eat well.

First, there were the fava beans.

You know what’s coming, right?

Liver

In this case, chicken. not the Dr. Lechter kind. Hee hee.

Parboiled, drained and washed.

Wood Ear Fungus, Ginger

Simmered the wood ear fungus, drained and washed.

A quick braise with whiskey, black pepper. Salt to finish/taste.

Braised Chicken Liver with Mushrooms, Wood Ear Fungus

Not very photogenic, but nom. Something different for The Cat’s bento.

Enjoy. Eat well.
