Cubicle neighbor mentioned yesterday she might go to Tamura’s Fine Wine and Liquors (for poke bowl) today and if I wanted to tag-along. Still had the leftover kau yuk to deal with.

Light bulb.

Breakfast.

Brown Rice, Kau Yuk, Japanese Salted Cabbage, and Dried Plums

Okay, cleared the way for poke bowl for lunch. Hee hee.

Tried combo bowl for lunch.

Masago Ahi Poke and Wasabi Crawfish on Brown Rice

The ahi poke was okay (uneventful), should’ve stuck with the all crawfish like the first time. Oh well, try try.

Dinner was back at Bob’s Bar-B-Que for another sandwich.

Grilled Ahi Sandwich

Trust me, the sandwich was a lot better than the picture. Fish not overcooked, perfect tarter sauce, bun not soggy/mushy this time. Nom!

There’s a baked bean/Polish sausage plate I really want to try. Heading back there soon!

Enjoy. Eat well.

Been anticipating the opening of Bob’s Bar-B-Que over on this side of the mountain for a while. Drove by the other day and noticed the open sign. 🙂

Planned on visiting today.

One of the hot items at the campus cafeteria was kalua pork and cabbage. Hmm, I could make a theme. Home lunch (which is nothing to sneeze at, leftover kau yuk, brown rice, and Japanese salted cabbage) is deferred until tomorrow.

Kalua Pork and Cabbage

Sometimes, The Mouse likes more cabbage than pork, today’s ratio of more pork to cabbage was perfect (kinda weird day and work).

A quick check on Yelp to see how the new Bob’s is doing. Oh oh, two and a half stars. One their first week? Maybe their first week has a lot of bugs to work out. A scan of the reviews didn’t look too promising, one review included a picture of a yellow card from the health department. “Danger Will Robinson”.

That kalua pork themed post is looking a little shaky.

Okay, the original Bob’s is a slight detour on the way home.

Original Bob’s

A quick check in their window …

Safe

An order of the kalua pig sandwich.

Bun got a little soggy (with the pork jus) on the drive home. It’s all good.

Kalua Pig Sandwich, Local Orange, Shiso Leaf

Nom!

Inquired with the server as to the situation with the new restaurant. It’s a franchise. Explains a lot. Hope they iron out the bugs, bad reviews and yellow card on their opening week … first impressions count.

Enjoy. Eat well.

And Chinese poached chicken, the inspiration for the dish.

Chicken Thighs

Poaching liquid of canned chicken broth, water, ginger, apple Royal Crown, and the pantry liquor bottle. There’s a bottle in the pantry, it started out when The Mouse had to clear some space and we had liquor bottles with just a “few drops left”. The Mouse consolidated the liquid into one bottle and the liquor is used for cooking. A little bit of this and a little bit of that (rum, whiskey, vodka, etc.). Thus “the pantry liquor bottle”.

Liquor Poached Chicken Thighs

Slow poached, low heat. No color, but the chicken is moist and flavorful. I guess I could torch the skin at the end to give it a “suntan”. maybe next time.

The Cat’s Lunch Box

Brown rice with brown gravy (one of The Mouse’s leftovers from the grocery store), defrosted choi sum (already cooked and frozen), and the chicken.

The Cat liked.

So, could you guess which Jackie Can movie inspired this cooking episode? Drunken Master.

Enjoy. Eat well.

“Poke” Another Way

Over the weekend, tried something “new-ish” at the mall.

Storefront

Poke, made-to-order. Uhm okay, try try.

Pick a base, a protein, a sauce, and various accouterments to your taste.

I went with a small salad, salmon, wasabi, tobiko roe, furikake, and avocado.

The Mouse’s “Box”

On the plus side, everything is “fresh”. On the down side, everything is “fresh”. The flavors did not get a chance to combine and meld.

Sorry, I think I prefer the fresh made daily, pre-mixed poke style, but to each their own. Try try.

Enjoy. Eat well.
