King Cake

Apparently, someone sends one to the office every year the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday.

King Cake

First time trying for The Mouse.

Mouse Piece

Mouse Piece

Kinda like a coffee cake. Cake was good, topping was a little too sweet. A cup of coffee or black tea would have been great.

Not sure what the significance of King Cake is and how it relates to the Easter. More research needed.

Enjoy. Eat well.

It’s been a bit of awhile since I’ve used the Martha (our cast iron slow pot). The usual suspect (pig foot). A slight riff on the “classic”.

Normal prep. Par-boil food, rinse and separate pieces, into the Martha with dried shiitake, brown ale, ginger, vinegar. Slow simmer for seven to eight hours.

Brown Ale Braised Pig Foot

Wasn’t trying to make soup, although there is a bit of soup. Aiming more toward meat for The Cat’s home bento. Not sure if the soup jelled, will check later.

As a preview, The Cat’s dinner last night.

The Cat said “おいしい“.

The Mouse said “ありがとう“, please enjoy, (bow). Hee hee.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Steamed Buns!

Hee hee!

Picked up from the Korean grocery store.

Steamed Brown Rice Buns

Steamed Brown Rice Buns

Ingredients include “raisin” and “walnut”. Turns out, the label wasn’t a typo.

Inside Shot

Inside Shot

I think the bun had one raisin, and part of a walnut. At least the label wasn’t lying. Hmm.

No matter, the bun was still tasty. Texture between Chinese bao and whole wheat dinner roll.

Try try. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

One Tastebud at a Time

Yesterday’s “epic” izakaya experience. At least for The Cat’s consultant’s new “friend”. Our favorite izakaya here in SPAMland.

Menu Cover

Sushi Izakaya Gaku. The Cat said the kanji means “joyful”. And eating here has been. Very.

The consultant’s friend is new to Japanese food, so we had to “go easy on her”. No super exotic dishes.

Because … California roll is “safe”. 😉

Ikura Zushi

One “regular” (on the left), and one using salmon for the wrap. Because the consultant’s favorite sushi ingredient is ikura. He was impressed.

Just in case the friend needed something “familiar”. To give her credit, she was a real trooper and was willing to try almost anything.

Eatin’ Light-ish

Dinner at an izakaya! Can’t wait. Takes a bit of planning, eating-wise.

Breakfast.

Microwave Rice

Microwave Rice

With seaweed and shiso furikake, see the pattern? Looks like one of those color-blind tests. Hee hee.

Lunch.

Fruit

Cantaloupe, honeydew, pineapple, and grapes. Because.

Anticipation!

Enjoy. Eat well.
