You may already know, I have a soft spot (my belly, hee hee) for lunch wagons (not food trucks). I also have a soft spot for local-style Japanese delicatessen (Okazuya). The Honolulu Magazine has a short description here. Both are old school, small kid time, bits of heaven.
Japanese “delis” maybe a local phenomenon. Tried to search for a definition and only came up with this. I dunno.
Lately, The Cat has been letting The Mouse borrow her car on Sundays. I can get to the church earlier, and not be too worried about having to stay a little later.
This is on the way to church (car route).
Haven’t been here for at least twenty years, not because the food was not good, but distance and location became a hindrance.
So, today, pick up these
Carrot, seaweed, konnyaku, bamboo shoot, water chestnut, Japanese turnip, all simmered in a light sugar/shoyu broth.
An Okazuya staple.
Those were the colors, neon pink and yellow. Made me think of Hello Kitty. 🙂
Think lunch made up of little tapas dishes, a little bit of this and a little bit of that. The prices have gone up from twenty years ago (oh for the want of ta TARDIS), but considering everything is ala carte, not too bad.
Needless to say The Mouse was very happy today.
Enjoy. Eat well.
