Cold Weather Lunch

But first, someone from the office, whom I vaguely recall meeting (she works on another floor) is retiring at the end of the week. Office chipped in for a retirement cake.

Cute ya?

The Cat is still hosting her friend. Eating on my own more than usual. Weather getting a little chilly (relatively). Thought I’d try here.

Supposed to be “greener”. Tried to decide between stuffed Portobello mushroom, chili, or vegetarian chili. The mushroom was stuffed with ground turkey, I tried to avoid ground turkey (a textural thing), the consistency of the vegetarian chili looked a little thin (again, a textural thing). Settled for the regular beef chili (with Big Island (Hawai’i) grass-fed beef. Chili and rice on cold days, yes please.

Chili Plate

Brown rice and vegetable slaw included. I thought the meat was a little too broken up (there’s that texture again), too “smooth”. Taste was not bad, added a couple of drops of Tabasco. The slaw was a cross between kimchi, shoyu and apple cider (I think). Really good. Best part of the plate. Could’ve used a finer chop tho. Funny, meat too smooth, vegetables too big, wanted the opposite. Oh well.

Had a “tourist” adventure today. Tell you about it tomorrow. Don’t  burn your turkeys (if you are so inclined to serve turkey tomorrow. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

I Pushed All The Buttons

Warning, some of the pictures (at least one) maybe too graphic for those with queasy stomachs.

The Cat is still hosting her friend from Hong Kong. Sunday buffet brunch at Orchids at the Halekulani. One of the premier spots to take visitors.

Messy Plate No. 2

On the carving table was whole roast pig, you can see a bit of it above near the 12:00 area of the plate. Had to ask (beg, plead, cajole) for some of the crispy skin. Think the chef was saving it for himself afterwards (just a thought, I would too).

Lots of salads, poké, sashimi, prime rib, etc.

Popovers

Popovers

One of Orchids signature items is their popovers with poha berry jam. Awesome stuff (not too sweet, a little tart … just right), was looking forward to one, maybe two. Alas, poha berries are becoming scarce, Orchids offered orange marmalade instead.

Orange Marmalade

Orange Marmalade

In my opinion, a very poor substitute. Oh well, can’t cry over “spilt milk” as it were.

Dessert

Food was good, no complaints, except for the poha berry jam. But the highlight reel of the day for me was in the bathroom.

Of course, I had to try it (no, there was no reason for its use). I pushed every button (even the oscillating and pulsating buttons). It was goooooood! I wonder where’s the photon torpedo button.

More reason for us to go back. Hee hee 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

Almost Missed It

More Protein and Vegetables

At this point, I was done. The Cat and friend were still talking (in Chinese, don’t ask me what dialect), took one more turn at the buffet table (not to get more food, just to browse. Heh heh.

There they were, in a bowl with ice.

What's It

What’s It

At first pass, thought they were some kind of DIY salad dressing, they were with the salad dressing. Had to study the contents for a bit for the lightbulb to go off.

Nattō!!!!!!!

Nattō!!!!!!!

Added the included mustard and sauce packet, and seasoned hijiki (seaweed) from the salad bar.

Stirred until frothy and slimy. Yummmmm!

The Cat’s friend wanted to get a bread knife. After some frantic searching, ended up here.

A brand new retail arm of a long time wholesaler. Think Costco/Sam’s Club-ish. Got her bread knife, almost one-fourth the price than in Hong Kong (and we complain about the high cost of living).

Ended the day at the outlet mall, more shopping. Can’t complain, got two BOGO shoes from Van’s (no, not a sk8er boi) nice and padded, like wearing a sofa. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.
