The Mouse’s dinner last night (sanctioned by the Cat).
The cuz’s went about a month ago, their bill was way out of range of my wallet. But ever since opening, I’ve wanted to try one dish, “Wada” Shiso Gohan, seasoned rice with minced beef tongue and shiso in sizzling pot. Even the price of that one dish was a little too much for my budget. My original thought was one night to order just the bowl and then go someplace else (like Mickey D’s) for the rest of the dinner. The Cat couldn’t understand.
But, while browsing the web, came across information that the restaurant started happy hour with selected food discount. Hmm. Interesting. So, when The Cat left for her trip, freed The Mouse up to do some creative dining (if needed).
At first, I was a little confused, but the Wada Mix Rice is the “Wada” Shiso Gohan, score!
But before the food, a partial shot of the place setting.
IMO, very Wabi-Sabi. 🙂
Okay, on to the food.
Rice, seasoning (I dunno what), minced beef tongue, shiso, and seaweed. Very subtle.
Deep-fried tofu in clear dashi soup. Very tasty.
Deep-fried pork belly. Need I say more? A squeeze of lemon (hiding behind the parsley), ketchup not needed.
Socks came off, both of them. Would definitely return (during happy hour). Total cost of dinner? Less than the sizzling rice at regular prices. By my reckoning, the regular bill would’ve been $23.75. My bill? $9.00. SCORE!
It’s a good thing I didn’t just come for the rice. I don’t think the dish would be as successful as a stand alone (think BiBimBap). The three dishes were awesome together.
Good eats. And. Cheap eats. Happy Mouse.
Enjoy. Eat well.
