Very unusual. Normally, The Cat doesn’t get so excited about a place to recommend. Especially with udon noodles (usually The Cat prefers ramen or Chinese noodles). So when The Cat sent this picture and said she recommends, have to pay attention.

Kitsune Udon

Kitsune Udon

Udon noodles in a hot broth topped with “Kitsune-age” (deep-fried tofu skin) from Iyo Udon. I previously tried here but just their tempura and onigiri.

The Cat raved about the tasty broth and the texture of the noodles.

A couple of days later, I went for the full experience.

Bukkake Udon

Bukkake Udon

Noodles in broth, sprinkled with tempura crumbs, green onions, and pickled ginger (the shichimi togarashi is me, from the condiment table). Okay, to put it perspective (mine anyway), the portion was “snack sized”. Had to add on some “supporting” food.

Sides

Sides

One oyster katsu, soft-boiled egg tempura, inari sushi, and green bean tempura. Noodles were nice, broth  was tasty, the sides were good, except for one thing, I was still hungry after. Maybe because I missed breakfast.

So, if you want, check it out, The Cat likes it. 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

Some frozen pork rib meat that needed to be cooked up. Thought about maybe sweet sour but went with root soup instead.

My usual throw everything together and hope for the best method.

Root Soup

Root Soup

The Cat liked.

Not a bone heavy soup, lighter, there wasn’t too much meat/bones. More vegetables. Although it’s a root soup, light enough for summer weather (according to The Cat anyway). Supposedly healthy too, according to ancient Chinese wisdom, all three roots have beneficial properties (don’t ask me what, I dunno). 🙂

Enjoy. Eat well.

Sesame Leaves Update

Stir-fried the rest of the sesame leaves.

Stir-Fried Sesame Leaves

Stir-Fried Sesame Leaves

Reminded me of bitter melon leaves. Next time, if there is a next time, consider adding ham or bacon. I did use some bacon drippings but probably not quite enough to balance the “herby”, “medicinal” taste.

Not my favorite, but not so distasteful either.

Eat well.

Castella Cake

The new office I started with this past week has access to pure Kona coffee (I’m on the fourth floor, Kona coffee is on the second floor). I’m not a big fan of Kona coffee, taste a little too acidic to me. But, it’s better than the commercial stuff that’s available on every floor.

Also in the lunch/break room was a lonely slice of green tea castella cake.

Green Tea Castella Cake

No picture of a cup of Kona coffee, its coffee.

Small kid time, it wasn’t castella cake but all pound cake from Sara Lee, not just pound cake, but all butter pound cake. Topped with vanilla ice cream (artificially flavored, not the vanilla bean stuff) and canned whipped cream (remember, I grew up in the sixties and seventies, before food was “serious”.)

The castella cake that was made here (the green tea one was made in Japan I think) used to be made by Bunmeido of Hawaii. It was popular with the Japanese fishing fleet that was based here and as hostess and other gifts. You can read a professional write-up about the place here.

When I heard the bakery was on its last legs, I thought about somehow getting the wooden baking trays, totally impractical of course, it was just a thought. I wonder where those trays went. Sigh.

Just a little trip back in time. Funny how we sometimes don’t know what we got until its gone. Just thinking.

Eat well.
