Noodles is Noodles

Just an update. Yesterday I got trained on the register at W-S (Williams-Sonoma). After about one hour of training, I got to work as cashier to real live customers. Talk about jumping from the frying pan into the fire. Hoo boy. Customers were lining up around the store (it was friends and family discount weekend). Good thing the veteran staff there were extremely helpful.

I wasn’t tired during my shift, but about ten minutes from leaving the store, I was exhausted (must have been the adrenaline crash). For lunch, I heard a nearby restaurant (Lobster King, 1380 South King Street, Honolulu, Hawaii), was introducing noodle with black bean gravy. I assumed it was Chinese zha jiang mian.

Turns out, the Chinese style food restaurant is owned by a Korean (go figure). There seems to a trend of cross-ownership of restaurants, Chinese owning restaurants that serve Japanese food, Chinese owning restaurants that serve Korean food, and now Koreans owning restaurants that serve Chinese food. Kind of got an inkling when kimchi came out as a condiment.

The other clue was the dish was listed as jajangmyeon, not zha jiang mian.

Beef cubes, onions, and black bean sauce. The Cat said each restaurant or kitchen will have their own recipe.

The noodles felt that they were hand cut, kind of uneven (a good thing). The sauce was a  little sweet for my taste, but still tasty. Only issue was the gallons of water I drank when I got home (I assume that used MSG).

Good to try though.

Jajangmyeon, or zha jiang mian, noodles is noodles. 🙂

I have a longer shift at W-S tomorrow, lots more to learn.

Enjoy. Eat well.
