Açaí Bowl, The Sequel

I was in the mood for an Açaí bowl. Read good reviews about this place.

Truck

Tropical Tribe (1637 Kapiolani Boulevard, Honolulu, Hawaii). Here’s their website: http://www.tropical-tribe.com/#!

Their Açaí is supposed to be purer than the commercial product (less additives). Tried the classic tribe bowl.

Açaí and Guarana mix, granola, bananas, and topped with honey. Compared with the bowl at the mall, the taste is very earthy, not as sweet, with a very slight medicinal note. The taste reminded me ever so slightly of Chinese grass jelly that we eat sometimes for dessert (it’s also supposed to be good for balancing the system).

Since I was here (it’s kind of out of the way for me), I also tried an iced yerba mate “tea”.

Again, there was an earthy, medicinal taste to the drink. This doesn’t bother me since I’m kind of used to drinking and eating Chinese herbs.

All in all a good experience. Sure wish the location was a little more accessible to me. Although the truck is nearby the mall, it sits amongst tattoo parlors, used car lots, and xxx movie shops. Good thing during the day, most of these businesses are closed.

Heading to meet The Cat, Chefs P & p, and others for new year’s eve dinner.

Wishing all a happy and safe new year’s eve.

See you next year!

Enjoy. Eat well.

Really Cheap Eats

I originally thought about calling this post “dumpster diving” but that’s really not true, and I didn’t want to give the wrong impression.

The grocery store at the mall will heavily discount their deli food at the end of the day. If you’re lucky when the discounts occur, you can have quite a selection. That’s what happened the other day. I just got off my shift with W-S, waiting for The Cat to finish. Usually, we would eat out, but since both of us were still on the mend I figured we buy food and eat at home.

The timing was perfect. Made it to the grocery store just when the mark downs were happening. I picked up five containers of food, plus white rice, and one SPAM musubi for a little over ten dollars.

Score!

Score!

Three containers of kalua cabbage, one container of beef curry (local style), and one container of chili with beans. Not bad. The Cat mostly ate the kalua cabbage and rice, me, the beef curry, the chili, and the SPAM musubi.

For the chili, I scrambled two eggs (Gordon Ramsey style), because, to me, eggs and chili are a good match.

In a nutshell, The Cat got three decent meals out of the bounty. The Mouse got two. Five meals for less than three dollars a meal. Not bad at all, not bad at all.

Hope your new years planning is going well.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Yule Log

Chefs P & p made a limited amount of yule logs this year. They were going back and forth about whether to do or not until a good customer begged them to make him one. Since they were making one, they made a few extra to sell. They made us a small one just to try. Chef p called more like a yule branch.

They explained that basically, it’s chocolate cake in a log shape.

Light, not too sweet. Very good. The Cat couldn’t get it until today (we’re still trying to get over our infections). Thanks Chefs!

Enjoy. Eat well.

Walnut Soup

Here’s the sequel to yesterday’s post.

One of The Cat’s favorite dessert is walnut (or almond, or pecan) soup. It usually consists of ground nuts, rice flour, sugar (or other sweetener), and water. There are instant packets out there, but there so full of other stuff, we usually stay away from them.

With the nut grinder, I can make my own.

Toast a handful of walnuts, grind the nuts to a smooth consistency (or chunkier if you prefer), add almond milk (or soy milk, or regular milk) to thin out the nuts, add sweetener (sugar, honey, agave, maple syrup, etc), steam for about 10 minutes (or microwave until warm).

The Cat was happy.

We also have pecans and almonds in the pantry, the nut grinder is in for a workout.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Nut Grinder

Sorry, the title could be a little ominous.

One of the reasons I went to work for W-S during the Christmas season. Employee discount!

Up to now, I’ve held off making purchases. I don’t my entire paycheck (and maybe more) going back to W-S.

Usually, the electrical products are only 20 percent off, but through Christmas eve, it was 40 percent discount (good deal). Picked up one of these  after my shift on Christmas eve.

If this works as described, it will be getting a lot of use (mostly by me for one of The Cat’s dishes). I also can start grinding my own spices. The possibilities are endless. Stay tuned.

Enjoy. Eat well.
