I grew up hearing about the “starving children in (fill in the blank), and usually try to “eat it up”. This struck home with me, and made me laugh. However, I am very wary about eating spoiled food. The day we held my mother’s wake, it was a hot July day in Detroit. We were too busy being hosts to eat, but that night we had sandwiches of cold from the spread we had laid out and I thought i was going to die of food poisoning. Everyone got sick–it was a horrible end to a horrible day (actually it lasted three days!). So when in doubt, I throw it out.
