Stayed out late. Cooking would take too long. Picked up Chinese take-out on the way Asian Mix (1234 South Beretania Street, Honolulu, Hawaii). It was near closing time, the steam tables were a little sparse. Owner gave us more than normal (he didn’t want leftovers).

The Cat's Dinner

The Cat’s Dinner

White  rice, greens with tofu, “spicy” eggplant (it was pretty mild), and pot roast duck. The Cat liked.

The Mouse's Dinner

The Mouse’s Dinner

Fried rice, bitter melon, pot roast chicken, “spicy” eggplant, and  steamed vegetables. Comfort food. :)

This place has just become one of The Cat’s favorite places.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Mall Food

Since I started helping at the chocolate shop and The Cat at her office, it’s easier to buy dinner at the mall than try to bring food from home.

Some of it is not bad, some are better than others. Most were purchased toward the end of the day when the businesses start to discount the prices. Definitely not fine dining by any stretch of the imagination, but when the tummy is rumbling …

Picked this up at the mall grocery store the other day.

Turkey Burgers with White Rice

Turkey Burgers with White Rice

This was pre-packed in the chilled section. Two burgers and rice, $4.99.

If I had bought the same thing from the deli section, each burger would have been $3.99 plus rice, over $8.00. I would rather buy these from the chiller and warm these up myself.

So, for $4.99, I got two meals of turkey burgers, The Cat got three servings of rice. Each serving just under a dollar. Cheap eats!

The turkey burgers were topped with some kind of barbecue sauce or catsup based sauce, not bad.

Warmed up the burger and used a whole wheat bun.

The surprise was they were stuffed with Swiss cheese. Had to take a couple of lactose pills, but well worth it.

Okay, they’re turkey burgers, not hamburgers, not pork burgers. Ground turkey has a smoother texture than beef or pork. I prefer hamburgers or pork burgers, but for a dollar each? Not bad.

I think I just lucked out. I don’t think these is a regular chilled item. Maybe leftovers.

An update, ate the other burger cold. To me, the burger had a meatier taste and texture cold. Just the cheese cold too, not melted. Oh well, can’t ask for everything … well you can, but may not always get it. :)

Enjoy. Eat well.

Dollar Days

Part of the work schedule at W-S includes on call hours. I have to check  on that day if they want the extra help. Yesterday, they did. The downside is my eating schedule gets a little wonky. Waiting for my shift to start, grabbed a bit of lunch. Just outside the mall is Sushi-San (1411 Kapiolani Boulevard, Honolulu, Hawaii). It’s a conveyor-belt sushi place (kaiten-zushi).

In their initial incarnation, they tried to be upscale. After the initial buzz waned, customers were pretty sparse (at least from what I could tell from driving by). It’s conveyor belt sushi! Not a sushi bar!

Next, they tried a one-price, all-you-can-eat concept. I guess they had problems with that one too. Currently, the price structure is one dollar for almost all plates (except for some special plates). Okay, Now we’re talking.

And of course (if you know me), I have to end sushi meals with …

Granted, it wasn’t the greatest sushi by a long shot, but at $1 a plate, can’t complain too much.

Enjoy. Eat well.

Cheap Eats

Last nights dinner at Chodang Restaurant (451 Piikoi #110, Honolulu, Hawaii).

I know, I posted about this place before, but can’t beat their “all day specials”. The Cat and I ordered Bibimbap.

BiBimBap

The Cat requested no meat in her’s. It’s not in a stone pot but for $4.99, we’re not complaining.

Last night’s banchan:

.

The chili paste on the kimchi is more bark than bite (a good thing).

.

.

.

.

We also ordered Haejangkuk (beef bone soup with cabbage).

Haejangkuk

For $5.99, a steal. Three fairly thick pieces of beef short rib (the same cut used for kalbi). The only complaint was we didn’t get a bowl of rice with the soup. I think it was we both ordered rice dishes. Booo, oh well, that won’t keep us from coming back (cheap enough).

For the two of us, less than twenty bucks for dinner (including tax and tip). Cheap eats indeed. :D

Enjoy.
