Just me, unsupervised in the kitchen again.
It’s the beginning of tax season, The Cat comes home late. The Mouse can’t wait for dinner (eating late makes me fat).
For the next several months, I’ll usually eat dinner by myself, then prepare something light for The Cat when she gets home.
Been looking at Italian restaurant menus lately (don’t ask). Came across a menu for one of the original Japanese/Italian fusion restaurants. We tried it a long, long time ago. I didn’t mind the restaurant, The Cat thought otherwise.
One dish that I didn’t try but was curious about is their natto and bacon pasta.
I was just about to make my dinner when The Cat came home a little earlier than expected. I thought I could finish before she got home, but, it was her fate to see (and smell) my dinner.
Digging through the pantry and refrig, and with natto and bacon pasta on my mind, I assembled these ingredients.
I planned to make natto and sardine pasta in mustard sauce.
Right now, you’re probably thinking I’ve completely lost it (I know some of my relatives do). But to me, there is logic to my madness. I’ve seen pasta dishes with beans and anchovies. In some packages of natto, there is a small packet of mustard.
And natto is just soy beans, albeit fermented, but beans nonetheless. Finally, anchovies and sardines, close enough. So, in my mind, my dish was not too far off.
Shredded some Romaine lettuce, threw the hot pasta on top (to wilt the lettuce), added the sardines and natto. Topped with fresh basil.
Natto and Sardine Pasta, Mustard Sauce. The picture is pre-tossed, forgot to take one post-tossed.
I thought it was great (I would definitely make this again, just not when The Cat is around), The Cat thought the mustard and natto together smelt like old socks. Hence the name of the dish “Old Sock Pasta”. I would but this on a menu. But that’s just me. Hee hee!
Enjoy. Eat well.
The Mouse

Sounds…interesting… (I LOVE sardines…) Gotta ask though, “What CAT doesn’t like fish?” She should’a been all over that! LOL…
Thanks, she would have except for the fermented soy beans, and she’s not a big fan of mustard.
Ahhh… fair enough.
